Why this matters

Google Sites lets beginners create simple websites without writing code. You work inside an editor first. Visitors cannot see your changes until you publish the site.

Complete these steps

  1. Open Google Sites in a new browser tab.
  2. Choose Blank to start a new website.
  3. Enter a site name in the upper-left area of the editor.
  4. Replace the large page title with a clear title for your project.
  5. Do not publish yet. You will continue building the site throughout this course.
Project idea: Build a portfolio, small business site, nonprofit site, school project, event site, or community resource.

Understanding the Google Sites Editor

The three main panels

Insert adds content. Pages creates and organizes website pages. Themes controls the overall appearance.

  1. Open the Insert panel and add a text box.
  2. Add a heading that introduces your website.
  3. Add one prebuilt content layout with an image and text area.
  4. Open the Pages panel and observe your Home page.
  5. Open the Themes panel and preview at least two theme choices.
  6. Use Undo and Redo once so you understand how to reverse changes.
Design tip: Use headings to organize information. Avoid placing every sentence in one large paragraph.

Designing the Home Page

Complete these steps

  1. Write a short headline that clearly explains the purpose of your site.
  2. Add a one- or two-sentence introduction under the headline.
  3. Add a button with an action label such as “Learn More,” “View Projects,” or “Contact Us.”
  4. Add a second section explaining one important service, project, or benefit.
  5. Add a divider or background style to separate the two sections.
Avoid: vague headings such as “Welcome.” A better heading tells visitors what the website offers.

Themes and Branding

  3. Select readable font styles.

Accessibility tip: Use strong contrast between text and the background. Light gray text on white is difficult to read.

Images and Multimedia

Pages and Navigation

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Create an About page.

  4. Create a Contact page.

Embedding Google Tools

  1. Create or select a Google Form for contact requests, feedback, registration, or a survey.
  2. Open the Contact page in Google Sites.
  3. Use the Insert panel to add the form.
  4. Resize the form so all important fields are easy to use.
  5. Check the form’s sharing settings.
  6. Preview the page and submit one test response.
Important: Embedded files must have sharing permissions that allow the intended visitors to open or use them.

Previewing, Publishing, and Final Project

Review the website on different screen sizes, publish it, and complete the final project checklist.

  1. Use Preview to inspect the desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts.
  2. Fix text, images, spacing, or buttons that do not display well.
  3. Test every page, button, link, form, video, and embedded file.
  4. Click Publish and choose an available web address.
  5. Select the appropriate viewing permissions.
  6. Open the published link in a separate tab and test the live website.
Final project requirement: Your website should contain at least three pages, consistent branding, three images, one button, one embedded Google tool, and a working published URL.
